United Solar Group’s Groundbreaking $1.73 Billion Investment in Sri Lankan Solar Power Plant

Introduction: We’re excited to share some groundbreaking news regarding United Solar Group’s recent proposal to invest a staggering $1.73 billion in a 700 MW solar power plant in Sri Lanka. This ambitious project, set against the picturesque backdrop of Poonakary Lake in Kilinochchi, marks a significant milestone in our commitment to renewable energy and sustainability.

Project Overview: The proposed solar power plant, equipped with a cutting-edge battery energy storage system, is poised to revolutionize the region’s energy landscape. This endeavor, presented by United Solar Energy SL Pvt Company, a subsidiary of United Solar Group, aims to contribute a remarkable 134 MW to the power supply.

Implications and Benefits: Such a substantial investment, totaling $1,727 million as 100 percent foreign direct investment, underscores our dedication to renewable energy and economic growth in Sri Lanka. A significant portion of this investment, $500 million, is earmarked for domestic project components, further emphasizing our commitment to local development.

Local Collaboration: We’re proud to share that the Northern Provincial Council, the Northern Provincial Irrigation Department, and the Agricultural Development Department have already extended their support. They’ve agreed to grant 1,080 acres of the shallow area of Poonakary Lake to United Solar Group on a 35-year lease agreement, facilitating the establishment of this transformative power plant.

Environmental Stewardship: As part of our project, we’re not just aiming to generate clean energy; we’re also taking steps to protect the environment. The project includes the construction of three anicuts around Poonakary Lake to prevent the ingress of seawater, an essential aspect of our sustainable approach.

United Solar Group’s Commitment: Established in 2009 by Richard Vargas, United Solar Group has grown to become a prominent player in the renewable energy sector. We’ve helped over 19,500 customers access affordable electricity in Australia and expanded our reach to six continents and 20 countries. Our diverse portfolio includes utility-scale solar projects, wind farms, hydro-solar installations, and green hydrogen initiatives.

We’re thrilled about the potential impact of this monumental project in Sri Lanka and look forward to the journey ahead as we work toward a sustainable energy future.

Stay tuned for more updates and progress reports on this transformative endeavor. Together, we’re making strides toward a greener and cleaner tomorrow.
